Ingredient Spotlight: Rose

February 11, 2018 Ann Braden

True confession? I never liked anything rose-scented until I began studying aromatherapy. I resisted, but rose finally won me over. It has a gently persuasive way with skin, is balancing and moisturizing, works well in acne blends and helps skin regenerate and heal. It is especially helpful for damaged, mature and aging skin which is why I now use rose otto and rose hydrosol in blends for both face and body.

Ingredient Highlight: Rose

May 11, 2017 Ann Braden

Rose flowers are exquisite, fragrant, and healing. They gently nourish, rejuvenate, and balance most skin types which makes it a great toner (we're working on one!). They are lightly astringent but not drying and works magic on aged skin. And they're anti-inflammatory as their calming properties can also help sooth rosacea and eczema. You can use rose petals directly on your skin as a mask or boil for rose water or use the rose oil- it's incredibly versatile.

Ingredient Spotlight: Witch Hazel Extract

April 28, 2017 Ann Braden

Our witch hazel shown here on the far left

Our witch hazel is a double decoction. First soaked in organic grain alcohol for 6-8 weeks, then simmered in pure water.  Unlike the clear drugstore variety, ours is full of color and tannins and goodness! It is used in many cosmetic products for its light astringent and firming properties. It has mild antibacterial properties, making it excellent to treat acne and skin problems.

Ingredient Spotlight: Vitamin E Oil

April 20, 2017 Ann Braden

It is the oil pressed from seeds and nuts that have high concentrations of Vitamin E. It is a powerful antioxidant that is excellent for preventing scarring, healing burns, and revitalizing aged skin. It works wonders with excessive dryness and is also beneficial on skin and nails. And because of this, Vitamin E oil is found in many creams and lotions, especially anti-aging moisturizers and skin brighteners. And safety note- always use diluted Vitamin E Oil on your skin- it's best to just add a few drops to your moisturizer (it's all you need)!

This rich butter is used for healing damaged or scarred skin, as well as dry skin and rough skin (knees, elbows, and heels). It is also a protective agent in harsh weather. Shea has natural vitamins and fatty acids which makes it super moisturizing and nourishing. It is anti-inflammatory which makes it beneficial for people with acne. It also reduces wrinkles as it softens and strengthens skin to prevent drying and helps the skin’s natural collagen production. This fantastic butter can be used as a face and body moisturizer, a base for home deodorant (like ours!), lip scrub (like ours), skin care, hair care (especially helpful to people with curly hair), and more!

Ingredient Spotlight: Himalayan Pink Salt

April 6, 2017 Ann Braden

Himalayan Pink Salt is renowned as the purest salt available. This is because it comes from the peaks of Himalayan Mountains which were under the sea over 200 million years ago. As the plates moved, it caused evaporation and intense conditions that lead to the formation of the salt crystals. And thus they are protected from pollutants (or most of them). Himalayan Pink Salt is helpful to soothe sore muscles, detoxify the body and skin, and balances pH.

Don't be Fooled by Greenwashing!

April 1, 2017 Ann Braden

On this April Fools' Day, don't be fooled by greenwashing! Greenwashing refers to advertising and marketing claims that make a product or company appear more environmentally friendly than it actually is. When a product has a big leaf or a natural-looking label, how can you tell who's really telling the truth?

Check the ingredients! Be on the lookout for creepy stuff like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, formaldehyde, parabens, PEGs and synthetic fragrances. I know, it's a lot. Make it manageable by starting with one product you use regularly.

Check the rating on http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ where specific concerns for each ingredient are listed, i.e. does it contain skin allergens, potential carcinogens or hormone disrupters? Another good resource is https://greenbeautyteam.com/toxic-ingredient-glossary/ Small, sustainable steps add up to a better, healthier future for you, your family and the earth. Start today!

Ingredient Spotlight: Jojoba Oil

March 23, 2017 Ann Braden

It is one of the most sought after carrier oils to be used in beauty/natural skin care products because of it's incredible similarity to human sebum and its ability to quickly be absorbed into the skin. It is non-toxic, non-comedogenic (won't clog pores), and it's non-irritant so it can be used around the eyes. It makes a great eye makeup remover. It works wonders on all skin types and is really popular in creams, massage oils, lip balms, skin salves, and hair care formulas.
