When I am Among the Trees

July 1, 2018 Ann Braden

When I don't know what to do with myself, especially if I've been spending a lot of time on all.....

When I am Among the Trees

When I am among the trees,
especially the willows and the honey locust,
equally the beech, the oaks and the pines,
they give off such hints of gladness.
I would almost say that they save me, and daily.

I am so distant from the hope of myself,
in which I have goodness, and discernment,
and never hurry through the world
but walk slowly, and bow often.

Around me the trees stir in their leaves
and call out, “Stay awhile.”
The light flows from their branches.

And they call again, “It’s simple,” they say,
“and you too have come
into the world to do this, to go easy, to be filled
with light, and to shine.”

Mother's Gifts

June 30, 2018 Ann Braden

Today would have been my mom's 84th birthday. I miss her. She always put the comfort and safety of others above her own. If you ever went to her house, she fed you. Immediately. And if my sister or I dropped a snack, we'd hear, "it's ok, I'll eat the one that fell on the floor." I will always be grateful for her sacrifices, presence, love and care which have shaped who we are today.

“My mother's gifts of courage to me were both large and small. The latter are woven so subtly into the fabric of my psyche that I can hardly distinguish where she stops and I begin.”

This is a favorite poem and a beautiful reminder to welcome and love ourselves the way we would greet a beloved love or dear friend. Nourish your own heart and soul.

Keepsakes from over 25 years ago. In some ways so much has changed for the better, yet in other ways it feels like we’ve gone backwards. Reminding myself and you, don’t give up. ❤️🌈💪🏻
